It is often said that competitive exams are not so much for selection of students as for their elimination. Lakhs of students appear for such exams, but most of them are eliminated, with only a few thousands getting through. Preparing for such exams is therefore all about getting that extra edge that makes you superior to your competitors and helps you to make that cut. A firm conceptual footing is essential for performing well in competitive exams, and analysis of previous years' papers has led to the conclusion that the focus has shifted away from tedious calculations and mem ordination to pure logic and strong concepts. In other words, the race favors those who have learnt the subject systematically and analytically rather than relied on memorizing standards tricks without understanding their basis.
